Now that all the hub-bub at work has slowed down to a simmer on most days, we can finally start the club officially!
I look forward to reading whatever book we end up voting for and even more so to our first official meeting/gathering to discuss said book.
How do we proceed?
Well, I'll tell you.
There will be a genre/topic announced for each "reading" and members get to make suggestions in the comments below.
Once we have enough suggestions, I will create a poll for all of us to vote on what to read. The book to win the most votes will be the book we read.
Now...the topic is: CLASSICS
That's right, anything that falls under the category of classic literature goes!
Please limit suggestions to just one book.
For the topic of "Classic Literature" I suggest Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray".
ReplyDeleteHere is a brief description of the plot as per wiki:
"The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian (whimsically) expresses a desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than he. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, and when he subsequently pursues a life of debauchery, the portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging."
Affirmation to Sandy's comment about work: IT's ALWAYS AVAIL!!! :)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I want to suggest The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells, which is mainly about aliens (Martians, to be specific) ruling the Earth.
I read up to 2 chapters of this back in 2010 and I forget everything all about it. I just know that I have to suggest this because it's about aliens, and a classic is not a classic if it is not good enough to be categorized like that. And it IS all about aliens. Mehehe.
